This year there really hasn’t been enough snow to do any cross country skiing around my neck of the woods, so instead I decided to find the snow myself. I traveled up to my Dad’s cabin on Leech Lake this weekend. One of the challenges of skiing across a big body of frozen water is ice heaves, which can be deadly if you happen to come across them before the water refreezes. 
Here’s a picture of one I came across this weekend. They’re actually pretty cool to look at when the sun shines through the ice. This one was several feet high, and the water had already refrozen around it-thank my lucky stars.
